ECO-Buy is an Australian award-winning not-for-profit Centre of Excellence in environmental purchasing

The ECO-Buy team are extremely happy with the result of the collaboration which has occurred between itineris and ourselves, with the distance between Melbourne, Australia and the UK being no barrier! Itineris' ability to interpret our requests, come up with solutions to technical and design issues which occurred along the way and complete tasks within agreed to time frames was greatly appreciated. We would not hesitate to recommend Itineris to other organisations.

Cara Horner, State Government Program Manager

Brief

The two part tool was designed to help the reader to measure and grade their own business' success in reducing its environmental, social and economic impact through green purchasing. It covers all aspects of green procurement, from policy to suppliers, and is designed to be completed on an annual basis and submitted for review.

The sustainable procurement assessment tool needed to blend seamlessly in to the current design and feel of the ECO-Buy site, and present a user-friendly way of capturing the complex information required for assessment.

The first part of the tool, looking at sustainability principles of the organisation, generates an automatic score and can be completed several times before submission. The second part of the tool captures purchasing detail specifics and is submitted in conjunction with part one for an overall score.

The target market for the tool was both members of ECO-Buy or organisations who have paid for its use and any outside organisations wishing to pay for its use.

Fulfilment

The design of this feature utilises the colours and feel of the existing ECO-Buy website design. The new assessment tool had to be capable of guiding the user through complex questions without being confusing or ambiguous as this would hinder results of the assessment.

As with any self-completed survey, it is imperative that instructions on how to complete the survey are clear and easy to understand to minimise the number of errors encountered by the user. This was achieved by offering clear guidance notes on-screen in conjunction with auto-populated fields and pop-up help information for keywords needing explanation.

In addition to clear statements used for each question, simple icons were employed with a 1-5 scale rating to ensure ease of use. For accurate assessment, it is vital that the completed data was compiled successfully by the applicant and accurately represented the business at the end of the process.
